Rzilient has completed its carbon footprint by the end of 2021
It is no longer a scoop, global warming is on the verge of reaching +1.5°C - the limit set in the Paris Agreements, and, as stated in the latest IPCC report published in August 2021, the responsibility of humans is unequivocal.
Following our signature of the Climate Act - along with our fellow companies aKagreen, Backmarket and Vendredi - we have embarked on our first carbon assessment at the end of 2021 with the aim of eventually reducing our footprint. Indeed, "every company must know its carbon footprint to be able to limit it efficiently". Although Rzilient's footprint is small compared to Amazon's or Microsoft's, every agent and economic actor must do their part.
This assessment is thus an opportunity for us to communicate on the first brick of our climate commitment!
Why do a carbon assessment?
Without going into the details of the obvious need for any company to contribute to the global net zero, in a VUCA world, volatile - uncertain - complex - ambiguous (to use the expression used by Ivan Mariblanca Flinch in his article on digital sobriety), implementing a low-carbon strategy is no longer an option in order to adapt to global changes.
However, the climate actions proposed and put forward by Sami are precisely inspired by the Net Zero Initiative, insofar as they do not talk about carbon neutrality on a company scale, distinguish between reduction, avoidance and absorption, while refuting the principle of offsetting (which, as we know, is a dubious low-carbon strategy). It is thus through the measurement and setting of ambitious and achievable targets, and the principle of contribution, that we move forward hand-in-hand in our climate commitment.
Insofar as our mission is to help organizations reduce their digital footprint(one of the most significant emissions in a world of increased digitalization), we strive to make the reduction of our own impact a core part of our DNA. Consistency and conviction are essential.
Our carbon footprint in 2021
In view of our existing partnership with Sami and our excellent relations, we have decided to have them accompany us in our 2021 Carbon Footprint exercise.
Beyond simply measuring our footprint over the year, Sami provides real support to help define reduction objectives as well as the realization of a corresponding action plan and its follow-up - which we particularly appreciate! Because measuring your footprint is one thing, if it is not followed by climate actions, the exercise is useless.
Once said, once done, our absolute footprint in 2021 was 82 tC02eq including all 3 scopes. This figure by itself does not evoke much to anyone, that's why it is interesting to understand our positioning within Sami's customer database, and within our sector of activity (based on Ademe and CDP data).
Not only is our intensity per employee lower than the average and median (of clients who have done their carbon footprint with Sami), but our economic carbon intensity (compared with two databases in the IT products sector) is also lower, which demonstrates the interest of refurbished versus new in an iT management policy!
Next: Reduction, contribution and awareness actions
We are not stopping there! The next step is to maximize our contribution to the reduction of our induced emissions (direct and indirect), to increase avoided emissions through the sale of our low-carbon products and services, as well as to increase carbon sinks through the financing of sequestration projects through our collaboration with Pur Projet (more information soon...). In parallel, we intend to raise awareness of climate issues among our stakeholders as a lever for action - the more we do, the better!
We have therefore defined short- and long-term objectives to, first of all, reduce the emissions linked to our reconditioning circuit, decarbonize our business travel and raise awareness internally of climate issues.
Since the majority of the team claims to be climate sensitive and most consider that they don't know enough about it, we will work to shift both curves to the right so that Rzilient team members become true climate ambassadors. 💪
A big thank you Sami, this is only the beginning!
